Samhan Period

In the Samhan Period, the Geochang area was referred to as Gosunsiguk or Geota, with the eastern part called Gaso and the northwestern region called Yeomnae or Namnae.

Silla Dynasty
  • Early Silla The Geochang area was called Geota and Geoyeol.
  • 757 In the 16th year of King Gyeongdeok's reign, it was named Geochang-gun. Gaso was renamed Hameum-hyeon and Namnae was renamed Yeoseon-hyeon. Both were incorporated into Geochang-gun.

Goryeo Dynasty
  • 940 In the 23rd year of King Taejo's reign, Yeoseon-hyeon was renamed Gameum-hyeon and Hameum-hyeon was renamed Gaso-hyeon.
  • 1018 In the 9th year of King Hyeonjong's reign, Hapcheon was elevated to Hapju, and Geochang, Gaso, Gameum, Ian and Samgi were placed under the jurisdiction of Hapju.

Joseon Dynasty
  • 1414 In the 14th year of King Taejong's reign, Geoje which was placed under the jurisdiction of Gaso merged with Geochang to form Jechang-hyeon.
  • 1495 In the early years of King Yeonsan (1296), Geochang was promoted to Geochang-gun as the hometown of Queen Shin, consort of King Yeonsan.
  • 1506 Following Queen Dangyeong's deposition early in King Jungjong's reign, Geochang-gun was demoted back to Geochang-hyeon.
  • 1739 In the 15th year of King Yeongjo's reign, Geochang was promoted to Geochang-bu with the restoration of Queen Dangyeong.
  • 1895 In the 32nd year of King Gojong's reign, Geochang-bu was renamed Geochang-gun.
  • 1914 Mari, Wicheon and Buksang of Anui-gun and Sinwon-myeon of Samga-gun were incorporated into Geochang-gun.

Republic of Korea
  • 1937 Geochang-myeon was elevated to Geochang-eup.
  • 1957 Wolcheon-myeon was incorporated into Geochang-eup.
  • 1972 Jinmok-ri and Chunjeon-ri of Anui-myeon, Hamyang-gun, were incorporated into Namsang-myeon.
  • Present Day Geochang-gun consists of Geochang-eup and 11 myeon (townships): Jusang, Ungyang, Goje, Buksang, Wicheon, Mari, Namsang, Namha, Sinwon, Gajo, and Gabuk-myeon.
