About the Festival

Geochang International Festival of Theatre is Geochang's signature cultural brand and it's held at the eco-friendly outdoor stage of Wicheon Suseungdae. Since its inception in 1989, the festival has welcomed over 20,000 theater professionals and 2 million spectators from all around the world over the past 30 years. With experiences accumulated over the past 30 years, it's aiming to become one of the world's top three outdoor theater festivals, alongside the Avignon Festival in France and the Edinburgh Festival in the UK in the next 30 years. Also, it's mid to long-term goal is to culturally commercialize theater festivals, attract 1 million annual visitors through 50 outdoor theaters and 200 domestic and international productions, ultimately elevating Geochang's global reputation as a theater city.

The festival includes an opening and closing ceremony, official performances from Korea and abroad, competition performances, fringe performances, academic events, and various hands-on experiences and exhibitions.
