Geochang Massacre Memorial Park
'In honor of the wronged souls' Geochang Massacre Memorial Park
There is a park that commemorates one of the most tragic events in modern Korean history. The Geochang Massacre took place during the Korean War when villagers in Sinwon-myeon, Geochang County, were massacred by members of the South Korean military.
The park was established to restore the honor of the victims, cleanse the pain that the bereaved families have endured and also promote national values like peaceful Korean reunification and national harmony. The construction was completed in April 2004 and the park was established as we see it today.
The memorial gravesite where the victims are buried, makes us solemn. To better understand the full story of the Geochang Massacre and its historical lesson, visitors can explore the History Education Hall. Every October, the park holds a Chrysanthemum Exhibition and memorial performances to honor the victims and welcome the visitors.
